Only by the form, the pattern,
Can words or music reach
The stillness, as a Chinese jar still
Moves perpetually in its stillness.

Mortimer Adler and Brian Lamb Discuss Books and Ideas

I love the ease with which he says, "I don't know the answer."

  1. We are a not-for-profit educational organization, founded by Mortimer Adler and we have recently made an exciting discovery--three years after writing the wonderfully expanded third edition of How to Read a Book, Mortimer Adler and Charles Van Doren made a series of thirteen 14-minute videos, lively discussing the art of reading. The videos were produced by Encyclopaedia Britannica. For reasons unknown, sometime after their original publication, these videos were lost.

Three hours with Mortimer Adler on one DVD. A must for libraries and classroom teaching the art of reading.

I cannot over exaggerate how instructive these programs are--we are so sure that you will agree, if you are not completely satisfied, we will refund your donation.

  2. It's interesting to listen to Adler, especially his responses to the three proofs to determine the validity of a religion that one caller mentioned, and the purpose of religion ("Who are we supposed to follow then?") that another asked about.

It is interesting to me that so many people seem to be looking for something to follow rather than something to teach them. They're such different concepts.
